I’m reaching out on behalf of Cambridge Sustainable Food to let you know about a surplus-saving initiative we’re running in South Cambridgeshire this summer and autumn, in partnership with Hope Against Poverty CIC and with funding from South Cambridgeshire District Council.
Our goal is to help South Cambs residents who have an abundance of seasonal fruit and veg from their trees/gardens/allotments to save their excess produce from going to waste by collecting it and redistributing it through community food projects.
In previous years we’ve received hundreds of kilograms of apples, pears, plums, courgettes, tomatoes and more from local growers and residents with fruit trees, all of which has gone out to feed disadvantaged members of the local community instead of just rotting on the ground – so this scheme really makes a difference!
To make donating as accessible as possible for residents across the district, we’ve organised a series of collection days through Hope’s Mobile Food Hub, which visits multiple towns and villages including Duxford.
Our next fruit and veg collection day for Duxford is Thursday 17th September. Bring your surplus produce along to the food hub van at its usual stop at Duxford Community Centre between 11:30am and 12:30pm, where it will be picked up and brought back to CSF where we will batch cook it and / or pack it into recipe kits to be redistributed to communities in South Cambs through the food hub network.
